Hong Kong Wetland Park Exhibition Gallery

Hong Kong has a very high density in terms of building. Because of that, buildings in Hong Kong would have less opportunity to show the interaction between spaces. Hong Kong Wetland Park Exhibition Gallery is one of the few places in Hong Kong that can clearly present the relationship...

Space + the Room (Part 2: Hong Kong Wetland Park)

Interior
My sketch

What do you identify as the solid:
Ceilings, concrete floor, columns, seats, information booth, banners, plants, stairs, glass curtain wall

What do you identify as the void:
sunlight, empty space in the building, the stream that connects the building to the wetland

What is the relationship between the sold + void:
- The ceilings (solid) and the concrete floor (solid) interact to form a enclose space

- The glass curtain wall (solid) allows natural light to enter into the building
- The stream in the center of the building connect the wetland and the interior

Result of the interaction between solid + void:
-The interior space is quite spacious, therefore, the interior can interact with the wetland outside

What specifics to the "parts" play a key role int he form:
- The stream starts from the entrance outside of the building and it flows through the building and finally flow to the other side of the building
-Same as part 1, this room is form by ceilings, floor, and walls. However, the glass curtain wall connects the interior space to the wetland that is outside of the building
- The vegetation in the building also brings the wetland into the building

What relationship is there between the container + the void:Aerial View (GC)

The shape of the building is very unique. The roof of the building connects to the field, making this building seems like it is grew from the ground. People would not able to notice this building if they don't observe carefully. As a result, by putting this building in the wetland park, it would not destroy the environment of the park.

Space + the Room

Original Image

Sketch

Solid: columns, arch, flooring, plants, furniture, pictures, human, electrical lamps, brass rails, glass

Void: sunlight, light illumanate by the lamp, enclosed empty space, virtual images from the mirrors, space between columns, space between the lamps.

Relationship between the solid + void: The arch (solid) with the space between columns (void) ; columns (solid) with the space between the columns (void); glass (solid) with the virtual images from the the mirrors (void); brass rails (solid) with the space between the bulbs (void)

Result of the interaction between solid + void: When the sunlight (void) shines into the interior of the building, the light shines to the glass, and therefore, the glass would reflect the light in the building, making the interior space brighter.

What specifics to the "parts" play a key role in the form?:

- The ceiling, the floor, and the wall in the right of the picture create a enclosed space. However, the arch in the left of the picture connects the interior space to the space outside the building.
- The electrical lamps in the building can lighten the dim area that the sunlight cannot reach.
- The ceiling, which is in an arch shape, become a reflector. The light in the museum would be reflected my the arch shape and therefore the light can focus the reflected light lights to the interior space.

What relationship is there between the container + the void?:

Exterior

The lamps on the exterior of the building is very similar the the lamps hanging at the ceiling inside the building. By doing that, the lamps can form a relationship between the exterior and the interior of the building.

See the Form

Original Image

Scanned page from my sketchbook

The original picture is showing four unique shaped rocks laying in the calm water. The top view shows the position of the rocks. I thought the rocks are sedimentary rocks as they have layers , and lthe ayers are the characteristic of the rocks. Therefore, I have drawn a side view to show the position of the layers on each rock.

REVISED VERSION

The horizon in the original picture separates the rock in the water from the sky. The four rocks in the picture seems like they are trying to reach the sky. However, it is somewhat impossible for them to reach the sky. Fortunately, the water, which is connected to the rocks, creates a path, allowing the rocks to reach the sky.
