Urbanization

The Wu Kai Sha beach is situated at the northwest of Ma On Shan. The beach is started from Ma On Sha Park and ends at the Whitehead Club Golf Driving Range. An artificially made trail is located at the southeast of the coast beside the beach. Before that area has been developed, there used to be a coal mine at the location of the existing beach. Now, there are quite a lot of newly built residential buildings around the beach. Therefore, there is quite a big contract between the view of the sea and the view of the back of the beach.

The main users of the beach are the residents and the campers from the YMCA Youth Camp as the campsite is right next to the beach. Residents and campers would cycle and enjoy their holiday at the beach. Although this beach is not a government official public beach for swimming, there are a few elderly people who manage to have fun in the water.

There are some weaknesses the beach. One of the weaknesses is the sand on the beach is not fine at all and it is not recommended to walk on the beach bare foot as it would scratch people’s foot. Also, the water is too clear to swim and play with, therefore people should avoid touching the water.

Despite the weaknesses of the beach, there is something that people can take from the beach. Something worth taking from the beach is the view. Although the Wu Kai Sha beach is not really situated in the wilderness, it has an unlimited open view. The view is not destroyed by the container ships like they do at the beaches in Tuen Mun. Therefore, when people are stressed, they can have a walk on the beach along with the view. In different time, people would experience different ambiances on the beach. Also, there are very few people occupying the beach and you cannot experience the silence of that at Repulse Bay. Because of the quietness, couples can spend their day on the beach and enjoy the sunset.

This structure is the National Gymnasiums for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The critical parts of this form is the suspended high tension cables. The cables are attached to a building core as a vocal point. In addition, the cables are aligned into a sweeping curve to form the unique looking of the building. The form of the roof are designed to resist wind that casue by hurricane in the region.I think the structure of this building is developed from the concept of spider web hanging on the branches. The branches are just like the two main columns of the building. Without the columns, the other part of the building cannot stand along.

Another natural phenomenon that demonstrates the first principle of this building is a silkworm hanging on the branches

P.S. I think it is really hard to find a perfect natural phenomonon that can reflect the structure of the building.

Habitation

Daily routine: Opening the window in my dormitory

Everyday when I go back to my dorm, I would open the window in my room, allowing fresh air to enter my room.

1) Hold onto the knob that locks the window

2) Pull the knob to unlock the window

3) Release the knob

4) Allow my hand to touch the handle of the window

5) Push the handle away from me

6) Push to my desire distance

7) Release my hand

Role of the architecture that play in the routine:

The window, which is a component of the architecture (dormitory), connects outside to inside. When I open the window, the void space outside can establish a connection with the void space in my room.

Commerzbank Tower, Frankfurt

This building has some sky-gardens that located at different levels of the building. When the windows open, they bring fresh air to different parts of the sky-gardens. Therefore, the windows also establish a connection between outside and inside. Unlike the conventional office tower, people working in this building will feel more comfortable because they can access more green space. Having fresh air instead of air conditioning is much better.

Form:

The Commerzbank Tower is a rounded triangular building with a triangular atrium. The sky-gardens are located at every 12 floors.
